Pace count is determined by counting how many steps you take to cover a known distance. You walk a measured distance, such as 100 meters, and tally every step you take to reach the end. That tally is your pace count for that distance, which you can then use in the field to estimate how far you’ve traveled by counting paces rather than measuring with a tape or relying on a device. This method is about the number of paces, not the length of each stride.

Why the other ideas don’t fit: measuring stride length with a tape gives you how long one step is, not how many steps you need to cover a set distance. Timing how long it takes to run 100 meters focuses on speed, not how many steps you take. GPS can track distance, but pace count is a personal step-based measure calibrated by a known distance, independent of devices.
